Cybertruck 4680 Battery Cell

During my 3rd year of undergraduate studies, I took my spring semester off to work with the Cybertruck Battery Cell Manufacturing Engineering team! It was one of the best experiences I could have had – I moved to Austin, Texas, and began working at Tesla's Gigafactory Texas.

CAD Design Work

  • I worked to optimize production for the 4680 Battery Cell for the Cybertruck, focusing on the cell's jelly roll welding manufacturing processes. Using SolidWorks, I designed a quick-disconnect jig for cell quality testing that would allow for false failures to decrease. Using 3D printing, I iterated through numerous prototypes before full-scale manufacture. To fabricate the design, I drafted 2D/3D CAD drawings for our manufacturers and in-house machinists.

Programming - Data Analysis

  • I learned how to query in SQL and parse through databases from manufacturing lines on the job. I was able to pick up a coding language efficiently, which allowed me to help identify major yield losses and improve yield. Throughout my time, I created, coded, and deployed 30+ interactive Tableau dashboards with tool performance, yield, and material input to diagnose the root causes of major yield losses and see the frequency of manufacturing defects.

  • I also analyzed SQL-extracted operational data using JMP and Minitab to inform tool recalibration decisions and identify yield loss drivers.  Overall, I determined the root cause of mechanical failures using SPC analysis, SQL queries, and physical inspections of machinery to prevent manufacturing defects.

Equipment Recalibration

  • I led the installation and deployment of an automated sample collection process across production lines that reduced cell production downtime

  • I recalibrated welding hardware equipment by adjusting laser parameters, actuators, and sensors to reduce the frequency of manufacturing defects. I also used SPC data to optimize weld strength and laser accuracy.
